Through their voices — their cris — Gaudé gives us a striking and poetic picture of the madness of combat, the dehumanization of war, and the devouring violence of history.

ReCollecting Dogon

The exhibition, ReCollecting Dogon, presented at the Menil Collection and supported in part by the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Houston, showcases over 25 examples of artistry from the Bandiagara region acquired by John and Dominique de Menil during the mid-20th century. The sculptures, masks, necklaces, and other works by “unknown” artists not only suggest the significance of art to daily life among Dogon peoples, they evoke formidable legacies of colonialism and the limitations of representing Dogon peoples through objects collected by and for foreigners.

Vive L'Amérique: French School Children Welcome Their American Ally

When the Great War started in the summer of 1914, a school teacher in the Montmartre district of Paris asked his students, boys ages 8-13, to write essays and express in drawings how the war would affect their daily lives.

The children produced hundreds of drawings and essays reflecting on the changing nature of the war, political leaders, letters to their relatives on the front line, and daily food rationing. Despite these changes, the students still went to class, did their homework, and continued their lives as normally as possible.
