Speakers of French in the United States

The latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey reports that 1,301,443 people in the U.S. speak French at home.This includes speakers of French dialects, such as Patois and Cajun, who are over 5 years old. In fact, French is the fifth most common non-English language spoken in U.S. households, after Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Tagalog.

New Americans write about Freedom of Speech and win trip to France

Last March, during the Month of Francophonie, more than 250 students registered in the French Heritage Language Program were invited to take part in a city-wide writing contest about Freedom of Speech. For over a month, they reflected about this complex notion and pondered over recent events like the Charlie Hebdo attack of January 7 in France, and more largely about the significance of Freedom of Speech today and its many implications regarding human rights around the world. For most of these students, originating from Africa and Haiti, Freedom of Speech is a particularly topical subject, not only because of the outrage the Charlie Hebdo event sparked in the Muslim world, Islam being a religion they also often share, but because Freedom of Speech is a right that is not necessarily well understood or respected in their own cultures and home countries.
